CASE STUDY: How a Manager Analysis helped Tom recognise his management skills & enhance his success

Meet Tom and understand how a Manager Analysis encouraged him to leverage his unique skills and become a highly proficient, well-respected and financially successful executive.

CASE STUDY: Tom from Melbourne, Australia: The benefits of the BG5 system can be demonstrated via a Managerial Analysis for a financial services professional named Tom. Tom had recently been promoted to manage a team of four direct reports who were all Sales Managers. However, although he had demonstrated a strong capability as a Sales Manager, he was unsure how this would transfer to managing a team.

What key learnings did he receive from the Manager Analysis?

Career Type: Tom is a Classic Builder, so it's imperative he loves the work he does. If he does not, he will tend to 'force' things to happen and end up overworked, exhausted and apathetic. His design type is great at building, growing and maintaining a business as he has the energy - when in alignment - to create and succeed. However, he needs to be emotionally involved and committed to his work for success to be achieved.

He immediately recognised a role he had endured early on in his career that brought him stress, dis-ease and frustration as it was in complete mis-alignment with his passions. So for Tom, ensuring his management role is enjoyable and energising (it can still be challenging though!) will provide him with immense career (and life) satisfaction.

Decision-Making Strategy (DMS): Tom has emotional DMS so the key is to recognise he needs time to gain clarity and emotional balance before making decisions (and the bigger the decision, the longer he needs). Recognising he's not designed to make decisions in the moment - and that was completely correct for him - was revolutionary and it gave him the confidence to articulate that to his CEO. That open, honest and practical information enhanced the quality of his relationship with his CEO. How? The CEO then recognised and appreciated that for Tom to reach the correct decision, he needed time (at least overnight) before providing a response.

It also provided insight into Tom's team as they had a variety of DMS's between them... so he could leverage this intelligence and manage his team better - in accordance with their unique styles.

Assimilation Style: Tom learnt there are a number of different ways people learn, process and integrate information with each style having its own unique advantage. Tom has a collaborative learning style so he is designed to work and collaborate with others - being with others helps him feel a sense of wholeness.

He recognised the challenge here immediately - it takes him longer to assimilate information but once he does process and digest it, he has a deeper understanding of the material. Contrast this to an Independent style who integrates the information immediately, but hasn't the depth of knowledge on first pass of a collaborative colleague.

Again, understanding this about his team ensured he was disseminating information on the products and strategies in the correct way for them individually so they all represented the information in the marketplace accurately.

To understand on a deeper level how a Manager Analysis helped Tom, please keep reading.

Work Environment: Although anyone can work in any environment for short periods of time, there are specific environments where you are designed to thrive. Tom's ideal work environment is 'Small Group' and in that environment he is best as the Team Leader of that group. He can also work well in a 'Large Group', but to a lesser extent, Solo. This made perfect sense as Tom has a collaborative assimilation style and really enjoys the ability to bounce ideas off colleagues. Working solo for extended periods of time leaves Tom feeling unsure and he begins to doubt his capabilities.

Business Skills & Attributes: There are innate business skills that others recognise in you, especially in a group setting. It doesn't mean you are automatically good at them, but they are easy to learn and develop. By recognising and leaning into these skills you not only enhance your career success, but it gives you 'permission' to delegate tasks that are not in alignment with your design. You can then relax - understanding these particular tasks are best not performed by you.

A BG5 Analysis identified five skills in Tom: Reliability, Capacity, Administration, Public Relations and Culture. (Details of these skills are included in a Manager Analysis). Based on these insights, Tom decided to understand how these inherent skills manifested in the workplace, and how to deliver value to his team and CEO by leaning into these. It meant he was more relaxed about delegating tasks that were not his inherent strengths, and focused more attention towards utilising the skills the analysis identified. The result was a better allocation of tasks within the team, happier team members and a more aligned and satisfied Tom!

Shadows & Distractions: When you know how these operate, you can quickly recognise when you are getting off track and course correct. When you don't you can get lost and distracted trying to be what you are not, and make unhealthy decisions from the mind out of fear. Further, you can (without recognising it) amplify the energy you receive from others - and if that's negative, it's a disaster for you!

Tom's design identified where he is taken off track and provided specific guidance for swift redemption. One example is his open 'Drive and Stamina'. How does this manifest? Impatience, restless, in a hurry for 'no good reason', not slowing down and enjoy the moment, rushing or feel forced into making immediate decisions based on others expectations, and taking on the stress of others - even unconsciously. Tom identified with all of these, and with awareness comes wisdom.

The advice was to slow down and relax, delegate to others who are better equipped to handle circumstances/situations, and remember to breathe (such an underrated stress coping mechanism in todays society). The wisdom is that you can let go of pressure that is not your own, maintain a healthy and productive balance between the pressure that moves life forward and the pressure to be still. In summary, learn to utilse the pressure energy to your advantage!

How did the analysis help Tom? Overall, Tom's experience helped him gain a deeper understanding of himself, his inherent talents, strengths and shadows, and clarified how he wanted to manage and be managed. By using this knowledge to improve his work relationships, lean into his inherent skills as a new manager, and gain the confidence to work with his unique nature, he was able to succeed in his role as Manager and enjoy incredible work fulfilment and financial success. He was also able to create a harmonious and inclusive work environment for his new team.

Why is BG5 the way forward? Overall, this unique and holistic approach with emphasis on individuality, integration of body and mind, practical applications, and empowering philosophy makes it a powerful tool for personal growth and self-discovery. The benefits of working through this modality with a certified practitioner are immeasurable.
